Meaningful Meals
by Tom Goodman
November 20, 2013

The English word "Baptists" comes from a Greek word meaning, "They who eat."  I bet you didn't know that.

So, in keeping with our heritage, get ready for three meaningful meals in the coming weeks.

First, join us this Sunday for our Hillcrest Family Thanksgiving Pot Luck.  Nothing changes about our morning schedule:  We'll worship @ 10 and gather in our small group Bible studies @ 11.  Then at noon, come to the Multipurpose Center for lunch with the Hillcrest Family.  We'll supply the meat, and we're asking everyone to bring a side dish to add to the table.  In fact, bring two side dishes if you can.  I'm looking forward to the kids' contribution:  They'll be bringing their favorite desserts!

Second, invite someone to your family's Thanksgiving meal next Thursday.  Find a university student who is staying in town during the holiday.  Or ask us for the names of international students who are curious about participating in this American tradition.  Or reach out to singles and senior adults who may not have family to join.

Third, buy a ticket to our December 8 "Missions Munch."  I'm looking forward to introducing you to my friends Mike and Lindy Howard, fellow Texans who have spent many years in Zambia with our International Mission Board.  Mike will preach for us during the 10am service, but we need to spend more time with them than a half-hour sermon will allow.  So, after the 11am Bible study hour, we're hosting a 12:15pm BBQ lunch.  In this setting Lindy will inspire and entertain with stories about their service in Zambia.  For good planning, a ticket is required for the lunch, and when they're gone they're gone.  Tickets cost $5 each, and no more than $20 for a family.  Buy yours after the service on Sunday, in the church office, or online.

As we talk about all these meals, don't forget the banquet of God's Word offered every Sunday.  In the worship hour we continue our sermon series, "Still," this week.  And in the small group Bible study hour, our Common Ground groups will go deeper with the sermon while our Sunday School classes continue their walk through the Gospel of John.

One more thing:  I hope you got to read through the "Explore God" testimonies included in the worship bulletin last Sunday.  You can find them in full here.
