Day 4 Devotional (Week 2)
Thursday, April 21, 2011

"He replied, 'Because you have so little faith.  I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you." -- Matthew 17:20

At eight I became a Christian, believing that God would take care of everything, including a husband some day.  At 30, with no husband, I began my own search.  After some wretched years, I fell on my knees and put my mustard seed of faith at God's feet.  Six months later, I met my husband-to-be.

In 1999, I was diagnosed with two rare and serious diseases.  The first could have devastating consequences.  Further testing showed it had mildly affected me.  The prognosis for the second was 5-7 years and then lung transplant or death.  I was numb and so focused on "I can't do this" that I didn't focus on God's help for my future.  Again, one night I fell on my knees and prayed, "Lord, please help."  Surely and gently He gave me back all the verses I had previously given friends for comfort.  Present research shows my disease to be minimal.

Recently, my husband started having memory problems.  After lengthy physical and cognitive testing, early-onset dementia was diagnosed.  Prior to diagnosis we had both prayed daily that the Lord would guide us through whatever was ahead and that our lives would reflect His glory.  Hearing the diagnosis, we knew the peace only God can give.  And now, we face each day knowing He promises never to leave us.

Dear Father, I thank you for your promise that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, your strength is available to us.  How often do we suffer in our own strength before claiming your promise!  Help us to be mindful of the blessings you offer us through faith in your word.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
