“Katrina Relief”
by Tom Goodman

A week ago I promised to send everyone a special e-briefing of ways our church is providing—and plans to provide—relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.  I will send additional e-briefings soon.

Partnership with Louisiana Church

In the worship service, I mentioned that we would be teaming up with a small church in St. Gabriel, Louisiana that hosted an Austin Fire Department triage unit.  Their pastor called me late last week to let me know that, so far, his church was able to handle all the needs of the evacuees staying with relatives who were members of his church.  He will let me know if this situation changes.

So, we are turning our attention to other avenues of aid, as outlined in the rest of this e-briefing.

FOR IMMEDIANTE RESPONSE:
Volunteer Training

If you would like to volunteer with a Southern Baptist Disaster Relief unit, the First Baptist Church of Pflugerville will host a training seminar next Tuesday, September 20, at 6:30 p.m. in FBC’s Fellowship Hall (306 S. 10th St., Pflugerville).  The training is specifically for the Feeding Team.  Call the church office to register for this training, 251-3052, by Friday, September 16th.

You will be given training in how to deal with victims, an explanation of the chain of command so volunteers work smoothly as a team, and instructions on how to deal with the impact of a disaster of this magnitude on the victim, as well as the volunteer’s emotional and spiritual needs.  The final portion is Unit specific – Food Operations.  Once trained, volunteers will be deployed for one, two, or more week(s) at a time.

For more information, go to www.fbcpville.org/KatrinaVolunteerInformation.htm.

Contact FBC-Pflugerville to sign up, but write me with feedback about your training experience if you go.

Adopt-a-Church

We have registered with the North American Mission Board’s Adopt-A-Church program.  We will let you know when we are partnered with a particular church.  Depending on the church’s needs, we may:

Send mission teams when the affected church is in a position to need them.   These teams can provide all types of needed ministry determined between the churches.
Send care packages to the affected church containing materials and items the church needs.
Send teams with construction skills that can help affected churches do repairs as needed.
Help the pastor and church staff (and their spouses) experience an enjoyable and special retreat opportunity that will help them "decompress" from the stress of living through such trauma.
Help with a special offering as an extension of grace and help to the church.
Send a care package to the children of the affected church. When you minister to the children of adults, you hit the heart of the parents.
Send training teams to help ministry leaders in the affected church as an encouragement to them as well as helping strengthen their leadership skills.
Help the staff get set up with computers and communications equipment they may have lost in the storm. Being out of touch is devastating in ministry.
If the pastor lost his library, or if parts were badly damaged, help him replace it.

How Are Hillcrest Members Helping?

Your Ministry Staff has served as chaplains at the Austin Convention Center, and we are scheduled to lead a worship service at the Center today.  Across the last ten days, I have received many stories of how our members have been providing aid.  I will send you a report soon.  If you or someone you know has played some role in relief efforts, let me know!
