Learning to Talk to God
by Tom Goodman
January 19, 2005
This Sunday, January 23, we begin a series of messages called “How to Talk to God.” We’re going to look at the Lord’s Prayer and discover eight ways to improve our prayer life.
The Lord’s Prayer is two thousand years old and yet so up-to-date that it’s the centerpiece of one of the most heroic stories from 9/11.
We all remember that there were three buildings hit on 9/11, but four hijacked planes. The fourth one, United Flight 93, was bound for some target in Washington D.C., perhaps the Capitol or the White House. Instead, it
inexplicably crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside. Days later, we found out why. A GTE airphone operator reported on a conversation she had with one of the passengers on Flight 93—Todd Beamer. In their article, “The Real
Story of Flight 93,” Newsweek magazine put it this way:
He asked her to pray with him. Beamer kept a Lord’s Prayer bookmark in his Tom Clancey novel, but he didn’t need any prompting. He began to recite the ancient litany, and she joined him:
“Jesus help me,” Beamer said. And then he set the phone down and the operator heard him say the now famous line to the other passengers, “Are you ready? Let’s roll!” Moments later, they stormed the cockpit.Across the next few weeks, we’re going to feature some dramatic skits and film clips in which the Lord’s Prayer shows up. Why not write me back and tell me of a unique experience or setting in which you have heard people reciting the Lord’s Prayer? Then, bring someone with you for our eight-week study beginning this week!
