“Bad Moon Rising”

After assassinations, riots, campus revolts, and Vietnam, the Sixties ended with a popular song that captured the mood of the times. I was only 8 years old when the song came out, so I didn’t fully understand what John Fogerty was
trying to say at the time—I just liked the beat. But looking back, he was describing the bleakness of his times with lyrics like:
I hear hurricanes a-blowing,
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers overflowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
I hope you've got your things together.
I hope you are quite prepared to die.
It looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye taken for an eye.
Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life.
There's a bad moon on the rise.
The Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Bad Moon Rising” apparently resonated with a lot of people in 1969. In troublesome times, it became a best-seller and went gold.
Near the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus spoke of a future time like the one John Fogerty described—a time of chaos and disorder. Jesus’ words were in response to a question his disciples asked him in Matthew 24:3, ”What will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
That’s the same question we’re asking in a seven-week series we began last week called Back to the Future. We’re going back to the Bible to see what it says about the future. The Bible promises us a future time when all that is
wrong about this present life will be set right, but before the bright dawning of that kingdom is a dark night that Jesus himself called “the great tribulation.”
Join us this week as we take a look at four characteristics that Jesus said would define this troubling time at the end of history.

P.S. By the time you get this, we’ll be halfway through our Vacation Bible School. Be in prayer for our great workers, and for the special events on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, I will explain the gospel to the kids. On
Friday, our church will host a Parents Lunch to end the week. This is the first church I’ve seen to end VBS like this, and it’s a brilliant idea. The gym was packed with parents and kids last year, and we anticipate another great Parents
Lunch this year!
