Here is this week's WINNING WAYS . . . .

“A Hello and a Goodbye”
by Tom Goodman

Hillcrest Baptist Church has a new Youth Minister!  The recommendation to call Jim Siegel was unanimously approved Sunday night, and Jim immediately accepted the call.

Strong turnout at all the meetings this weekend showed how interested our church is in the future of our youth ministry.  Jim was deeply impressed with the students, the parents, and the youth workers.  I think God is planning to do some great things through the combination of Jim Siegel and the Hillcrest Student Ministry!

The exact date of his arrival to Austin is still being determined, but his first Sunday will be February 22.  Spread the word and let’s make this a special day for Jim’s start!

We want to thank the Search Committee for six months of hard work:  Debbie Marrett (chair), Tom Pugh, Bob Hill, Jennifer Hicks, Jason Alvis, and Judi Raymund.  They met weekly—examining resumes, reviewing questionnaires, and holding interviews.  They also did a lot of praying and were careful to make frequent reports of their progress to youth and parents during the Sunday School hour.  We also want to thank those who served as clerks for the search process:  Kathy Wiederkehr, Tammy Wallace, and Judi Raymund.

Dale Linam and Randy Moore made a great team of interim youth ministers, and we are so grateful for the care-giving and stability they provided during this long interim.  We had a chance to publicly thank Randy and Jill in November, and this Sunday we will take time to thank Dale and his family.

Along with our “hello” to a new staff member, though, we’ll soon say “goodbye” to another.  Charles Draper has announced his upcoming move to Houston.  While we rejoice with him in his return to lead the education ministry of his “home church” of 20 years, we’ll sorely, sorely miss his capable shepherding of the Sunday School ministry here.  I hope you’ll come this Sunday evening, February 15, at 6:30 p.m. to hear Charles share a little more about his decision.  Also, Charles and I want to meet with all Sunday School leadership next Wednesday, February 18, at 6:00 p.m. so we can plan for the future.

Be praying for our church in these “hellos” and “goodbyes” in the next few weeks!

Tom

P.S.  There’s another “good-bye” to report, too.  The Ethiopian congregation that has met in part of our building for several years has found property of their own. Pastor Paulos would like to express his thanks to our congregation.  He and his choir will be in our second service (10:45 a.m.) this Sunday, February 15, to share worship with us.  Come and be part of this special time.
