“Shaped to Serve”

by Tom Goodman

Part of the job we have as leaders is equipping people for service (Ephesians 4:11-12).  This is what distinguishes the kingdom’s officers from the kingdom’s ground troops.  I’ve met a lot of dedicated people who do the work of ten, and I thank God for them.  But leaders have a higher responsibility.  As a leader, you aren’t supposed to just do the work of ten people.  Instead, you are to enlist, equip, and encourage so that ten people are put to work!  I really believe that when we Christian leaders are evaluated by God, he will take into account not just how hard we worked but how many people we put to work!  That’s our job.

This Sunday evening, December 7, the Ministry Staff will help me lead a workshop designed to equip people for service.  The workshop is called “How to Be a Difference-Maker.”  We are going to help people identify how they are SHAPED to serve God at Hillcrest.  The acronym “S-H-A-P-E” has become a famous way to teach the five ways God has “shaped” us to serve in His kingdom.  In this workshop, we will help the entire church identify their place of ministry at Hillcrest.

Another reason you should come: All those who have joined our church in 2003 will be given special recognition in this service.

Note the special time for this workshop: our normal evening service begins at 6:30, but this Sunday we will begin at 6:00.  The service will conclude at our normal 7:30 time.  Those who are in AWANA and other Sunday night activities will be given a chance to go through this workshop at a later date.

This is the “sequel’ to the “Discover Hillcrest” class.  We provide the “Discover Hillcrest” workshop monthly for those who want to join.  From now on, we’ll provide the “How to Be a Difference-Maker” workshop quarterly as the “next step” for those who have joined our church.  The workshop will help them identify their place of service at Hillcrest.

First Corinthians 12:5 (NIV) says, “There are different kinds of service.”  I think a lot of people will find their unique place of service because of this workshop, so as you attend be praying for those sitting around you!
