by Tom Goodman
February 15, 2006

I’m taking six weeks in this newsletter to cover what you need to know about our two morning services that begin Easter Sunday.  We’re looking at six topics:

o  What the services will look like
o  Why we are going to two services
o  What the schedule will look like
o  How the new schedule will improve our ministry to families
o  How we will create a new hour of Adult Bible Study
o  How you can be a blessing to your church family

We’ve already covered the first two (archived here).  Here’s the third:  What the schedule will look like.

Nothing changes for those who prefer the “smooth blend.”  You will show up for Bible study at 9:30 a.m. and your worship service will start at 10:45 a.m. just as it does now.  Those who prefer the “bold blend” will worship at 9:30 a.m. and then have their Bible study hour at 10:45 a.m.

In this arrangement, no one changes unless they want to.  No one will be asked to move from your 9:30 class.  At the same time, no one will be asked to stay in your group if they decide to attend the bold service while the rest of you meet in your classroom.  Many members of your Bible study class will decide to stay together as a class and continue to worship in the “smooth” style we currently offer.  On the other hand, some members look forward to worshipping in the bold style they love.  The important point is that everyone will have a choice on Easter that we’re not giving them now.

What about middle school and high school students?  We’ll offer classes at 9:30 a.m. for those families who want their teens with them at the Smooth Blend service as well as at 10:45 a.m. for families who want their teens with them at the Bold Blend service.  Now, understand that most students will probably attend the service that offers contemporary music, which will put most students in the second Bible study hour.  In fact, some parents may make their decision about which service to attend based upon conversations with their teens.  Again, though, the important point is that everyone will have a choice on Easter that we’re not providing now.

What about the children’s program?  We’ll look at that in next week’s newsletter.  Stay tuned!

—Tom

Interesting Articles.  You’ll like what Darrell Bock has to say in his article, “The Da Vinci Code: Threat or Opportunity?”  With Ron Howard’s film version of The Da Vinci Code set to release May 19, I will lead a three-week sermon series on the subject right after Easter.  I want to help you respond to the questions your friend will be asking.  By the way, USA Today had an interesting opinion piece about evangelicals and film called, “Evangelicals Miss the Big Picture.”  Check it out.  Also, I liked “The Soul Hunters of Central Asia,” about the most Baptist state in the world—Nagaland.  No, I didn’t know where it was, either, but they are aiming to become a powerhouse for cross-cultural missions.  Inspiring story.  Finally, The New Yorker has a great piece on Michael Gerson, former speechwriter and continuing policy maker at the Bush White House.  It’s called “The Believer,” and it was good to read that the President has people like this to rely on.
Next-Level Living.  Learn how to live at the next level from the one you’re on!  Our Sunday morning series through Colossians continues this Sunday.  If you want to review the messages from the first five weeks, click here.  You will also find instructions for receiving the sermons as weekly podcasts to that new iPod or MP3 player you got for Christmas.
Pastor’s Prayer Meetings.  Diane and I are committing two nights a week for seven weeks to pray with every Hillcrest member and interested attender.  If we have your address, you’ll soon get a letter inviting you to a particular night.  Watch for your letter, then contact my assistant to confirm that the date works for you.  Jami can be reached at jami@hbcaustin.org or 345-3771.  It will reduce our work load in the office if you reply to the letter once you receive it.
