“Godisnowhere”
by Tom Goodman

“Surely the Lord is in this place,
and I was not aware of it."
—Genesis 28:16

Look at the title of this article: Godisnowhere.  Try to read it out loud.  Depending on your perspective, you will say, “God is nowhere” or “God is now here.”

It’s true for life, too.  We get frustrated with our job, our marriage, our church, or our circumstances, and we say, “God’s not here.”  But if we will open our eyes to God’s activity, we’ll say what Jacob said when he discovered God in his lonely desert wanderings:  “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it!”  Ask God to open your eyes to what he’s doing around you.

Most of you will get this newsletter on the last day of our Spiritual Growth Conference with Tierce Green, Wednesday, August 17.  Join us at 7:00 p.m.  This four-night conference was designed to kick off our Fall Calendar, and it all begins this Sunday, August 21:

Sweet!  Back by popular demand, “Movie Messages” returns to the pulpit.  It’s a series of Bible studies on the topics that inspired our favorite films.  We begin this Sunday with Napoleon Dynamite.  The film character, Napoleon, and the biblical character, Samson, had some things to learn about finding true love.  If you know of someone who loves this movie, invite them to this weeks message!

Discover Hillcrest.  The class will be held right after the morning service, AND LUNCH IS PROVIDED!  The class is for those who want to become members, and for those who just want to learn more about Hillcrest.  You’ll get more information in your e-mail inbox this week.

The Hillcrest Institute Is Here!  We’ve been praying and planning for over a year for our new Sunday night format!  The classes are exciting and they’re already filling up.  Enrollment is limited, so go online to register!  Be sure to read Herb’s column to learn more at www.hillcrestaustin.org/#education.  Also, read BJ’s column at www.hillcrestaustin.org/#children to learn more about our exciting Awana/Choir combination for kids on Sunday nights this year!

WWW stands for Wonderful Wednesday Worship.  Next Wednesday, August 24, we’ll begin something you and I have never done before.  Join us for WWW.  The event starts in the Worship Center promptly at 6:30 p.m. and ends sharply at 7:20 p.m.  We’ve designed this as a spiritual “booster shot” in the middle of your busy week.  For more information, read Gene’s article at www.hillcrestaustin.org/#music.  Also, read Jim’s article about Wednesday worship for youth at www.hillcrestaustin.org/#youth.

Don’t miss these chances to grow!  I get stories every week about how God is using the work of Hillcrest to impact someone’s life.

Godisnowhere.  What do you see?

—Tom
