by Tom Goodman
July 20, 2005

Lelaina:  I just don’t understand why things just can’t go back to normal at the end of the half hour like on the Brady Bunch or something.
Troy:  Well, ‘cause Mr. Brady died of AIDS.  Things don’t turn out like that.
If you’re between 20 and 40, you probably identify with that exchange between Lelaina and Troy, played by Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke in Ben Stiller’s directing debut, Reality Bites.*  On the one hand, you want to look at life with the undying optimism of the young Houston filmmaker Lelaina.  On the other hand, you’re guarded like Troy, who’s learned to expect bitter disappointment from life, and who uses his sharp wit and sarcasm to stay “one up” on the people and things that could hurt him.

It’s hard to capture the mood of an entire generation in a sound bite, but this one comes pretty close.  Those in their 20s and 30s have this wonderful, odd mix of optimism and guardedness.  In this Sunday’s message, we’ll see why that’s so, and we’ll see what God’s word has to say to young adults.

We’re in the middle of a Sunday morning series examining the characteristics, contributions, and challenges of four Hillcrest Generations:

        Builders:  Senior Adults
        Boomers:  Median Adults
        Busters:  Young Adults
        Bridgers:  College and Younger

It’s important that you keep in mind the things the generations have in common and the things that make the generations different.  We’ve already looked at Builders and Boomers.  If you missed these messages, go to Click here to listen.  This Sunday we turn our attention to the Hillcrest Busters.  In a five mile radius from our church, forty-five percent of the population falls in this age range.

This Sunday evening, we continue our Ramblin’ Road Trip!  Herb Ingram is taking a packed roomful of adults through a five-week road trip through key Old Testament events.  Jim Siegel is taking vanloads of youth on a real road trip to Austin-area destinations each week.  And BJ’s team is helping our children discover some great tourist attractions across the U.S. while learning some important things about God!

It’s not too late to get on board our Ramblin’ Road Trip!  The fun runs from 5:00-7:30 p.m. each Sunday, so come join us!

Tom
