Service or Serve-Us?
by Tom Goodman
November 3, 2004
There are two kinds of people in every church. One group asks the question, “Where Can I Be of Service?” The other group asks the question, “How Are You Planning to Serve Us?” Which group do you belong to--the Service group or the Serve-Us group?
“Service” is the fourth purpose God expects you to fulfill. We’ll be reading about service in our daily devotionals, studying about service in our HOST Groups, and discovering places to serve in our Ministry Fair!
This Sunday, our worship hour will be held in two locations! After your HOST Group meeting, come to the Worship Center as usual at 10:45 a.m. After about 10 minutes of music and 10 minutes of teaching, I will release you to spend the second half of our worship hour in the Multi-Purpose Center. When you walk into the gym you will see displays of ministries our church hosts, as well as missions our church supports.
You will walk away from this Ministry Fair amazed at all your church does and challenged to find where you “fit.” Don’t miss this Sunday, November 7!
Speaking of service, a big “Thanks!” goes out to all those who served in some way last weekend. We knew that scheduling a Fall Fellowship on the same weekend as the annual Craft Show was going to be demanding. It was, but you “dug deep” and found the energy to make it work. It’s unlikely we will do a Fall Fellowship and a Craft Show so close together every year, but a job well done this year, guys. You’re great!
Regarding these upcoming “Purpose-Driven” events, be sure to pray and participate:
The Ministry Fair, Sunday, November 7
The “Invitational” Golf Scramble, Saturday, November 13
Discover Hillcrest Membership Class, Sunday, November 14
Celebration Sunday, November 21
For more information about these events, read the weekly “Purpose Page.” You will find it in your bulletin, in your newsletter, and at www.HillcrestAustin.org/pdl/purposepage.pdf.
Keep up the great work! See you this Sunday!
Work Day: From 8:30 a.m. to noon this Saturday, November 6, be a “Premise Keeper!” We’ve got several projects to tackle. Bring wheelbarrows, shovels, scoops and rakes. For more information, contact
The MPC “Viewing Center” Is Moving! Due to the Ministry Fair display, all HOST Groups that normally meet in the MPC to view the “Purpose-Driven” video lesson will meet in the Worship Center on November 7.
Hillcrest “Invitational” Golf Scramble at Star Ranch on Saturday, November 13. Take advantage of this outreach tool to introduce your friends and co-workers to your Hillcrest family. For more information, go to www.HillcrestAustin.org.
Discover Hillcrest—Special Purpose-Driven Campaign Edition: Sunday, November 14. The class will be held right after the morning service, AND LUNCH IS PROVIDED! The class is for those who want to become
members, and for those who just want to learn more about Hillcrest. Topics include:
The most important thing you need to know about Jesus
What we teach about baptism
Four fundamentals of spiritual growth, using the acronym “H.I.L.L.”
How to “connect” with others in the church
How to help us reach others for Christ and church involvement
How to worship
While I teach the adult class, BJ teaches "Discover Hillcrest Kids" for children
New Chapter: I’ve added a new chapter to The Anchor Course at www.anchorcourse.blogspot.com. Reading these chapters will help you explain the
faith, and forwarding these chapters to your seeking friends will help them explore the faith.
