Get Ready for This Churchwide Banquet!
by Tom Goodman
December 20, 2012

For the next several Sundays, the Connection Card will feature several ways to help with our "Winning Ways" Banquet in January.  As a Hillcrest leader, I wanted to give you a "heads up" on the upcoming event and enlist your help to make it a success.

This special event will take place on Sunday evening, January 27, from 6-8 p.m. in the Multipurpose Center.  Jay and Dee Simpson will be cooking the BBQ, and Mark Regnerus will be speaking.  Tickets are $6, and childcare for babies through 4th grade will be available for $5 per child.  The childcare price includes the child's dinner.

I will be interviewing Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of Texas.  He is the author of several articles and books on young adults and family issues.  Most recently, he was the subject of national media attention from his study of adults who had been raised by homosexual couples.  I've asked Mark to share with us what he's learned about the value and the challenges of being a Christian in an academic setting, especially in his particular field that is often unfriendly to Christian belief.  I think this event will give you insight and inspiration to live faithfully in your own chosen vocation.  I also believe this event will impress the non-Christians we invite:  Most seekers want to know what it's like to be a believer in the "real world" before they seriously consider belief for themselves.  Mark Regnerus is an example of a faithful Christian who is also highly competent in his academic setting.

Now, here's how you can help as a Hillcrest leader.

First, volunteer for a team.  Use this Sunday's Connection Card to express your willingness to serve on the Prayer Team, the Decorations Team, the Custodial Team, and/or the Server Team.  Or just write my assistant, Jami, and tell her you're willing to serve (jami@hbcaustin.org).

Second, be thinking about who you will bring to the banquet.  You can set the example for others by sharing with them your plans to invite a coworker or a neighbor.  You may even want to buy your friend's ticket.

Third, promote the event among those you lead.  We'll soon be asking the leaders of our small-group ministry to encourage their groups to attend.  In fact, we'll be challenging Common Ground groups and Sunday School classes to sit together at the banquet.  That way they can introduce their group to the friends they bring.

Feel free to forward this email to anyone you think would be interested!
